Public Service Announcements

I found the PDF describing how to make an effective Public Service Announcement (PSA) very helpful. It started from the top, describing what exactly a PSA is, and why the PSA should matter to the viewers. It also stated that while PSAs are, in a sense, trying to inform the public about a specific situation, viewers see it as nothing more than just another advertisement. Because of it, the PDF stated that it is important to capture the viewers' attention, to keep it, and to inform the viewers why the circumstance is relevant to them.

I found this PSA very helpful an an example. This PSA uses the image of hungry children to grab the viewers attention as well as create a sense of urgency. Though the children depicted are obviously sad, the background music provides a sense of hope that with the help of the viewers, this problem could be solved. It also touches upon how many children go without eating in our own country. It points out how wasteful we are considering we are "a land of plenty", yet there are still starving children.

The aspect that intrigued me most about this PSA was that not only was a completely plausible situation shown, but situations like this are not uncommon. Once the PSA reached its most tense point, that was when the message was shown.

The key points I will emphasize in my PSA are the high rates of pollution, harm to the environment, and the fact that nonrenewable energy sources will soon run out. I will used a text based PSA, similar to the example we used in class.

Outline:

-Introduction, explaining why finding a renewable energy source is needed
-Facts on global warming
-The availability of solar thermal energy
-Proposed solutions

Capstone Project Statement of Intent

a) The goal of this project is to determine whether nanotechnology is a viable solution to combating medical diseases such as cancer, and if so, to narrow the scope of which nanoparticles are most effective.
b) Humankind has always dealt with sickness and disease, and nanotechnology is a new and upcoming technology that allows us to treat these diseases with a high rate of effectiveness and specific targeting,
c) I plan to have a career in the health sciences, possibly in research, and this project almost directly connects with my career objectives: to better the human condition.
d) By reviewing the effectiveness of the application of nanotechnology is the medical field and determining whether it is applicable, it is possible to increase the general health and quality of life for humans,
